Girl Guiding 2008Girlguiding 12 Hour Challenge!
Girlguiding UK calls on the people of Shirley to take up the 12 hour Challenge

Girlguiding UK is calling on residents who live in Shirley to take part in the 12 hour Challenge and give 12 hours of their time over the next 12 months to extend opportunities to local girls.

The 12 hour Challenge is an initiative to tackle the high number of girls waiting to join Rainbows, Brownies and Guides due to a shortage of adult volunteers.

Girl Guides 12 Hour ChallengeThe 12 hour Challenge is completely flexible; volunteers might choose to help out for an hour a month or do a couple of half-days in a year. It could be that they have an interesting hobby or expertise - whether it's acting or pottery, or book-keeping, the local Rainbows, Brownies and Guides would like to hear from them. Volunteers might be able to help with publicity, create a website, lend a hand to organise a special event, or give a talk to inspire the girls to become more involved with a topical issue - the list is endless. The opportunities for volunteering are diverse and existing volunteers speak enthusiastically of the rewards of working with young people and like-minded adults. We are not asking people to make a regular commitment. We simply need extra adult help with various jobs.

Girl Guides 12 Hour ChallengeGirlguiding UK recognises that, due to changing lifestyles, adults have less disposable time to dedicate to community projects and volunteering. The 12 hour Challenge is the perfect solution to enable guiding to continue successfully within the local community, with the help of adults who have busy lifestyles and want to volunteer.

COULD THIS BE YOU?
Could you spare a little time to help some younger folk?
They’re keen to learn, love games and fun and also like a joke.

Do you sometimes wish for company? Has your brood now flown?
Or are you new to Shirley? Living away from home?

The Rainbows at the 4th St George’s are feeling rather sad
Their Leader’s leaving, and they’re really not that bad.

If no one else comes forward their unit may close down
No weekly meetings to enjoy, no walks around the town.

They’ll miss the games they love to play and all the things they’ll learn
And as for younger sisters - they’ll never get their turn.

No special skills are needed just time and patience too
There’s a really friendly District team to show you what to do.

But where have all the Guiders gone? I’m sure you’ll want to know,
Those maiden aunts and dear old folk who did it years ago.

Those people aren’t around these days, its upto me and you
To give our time, make lots of friends and help the youngsters too.

Its all too easy just to sit and hope for someone else
But Guides and Brownies now are run by people just like US!!

If you would like to know more about keeping the 4th Rainbows open or helping with Rainbows, Brownies or Guides elsewhere in Shirley, Jane Marcroft, District Commissioner for Shirley, would love to hear from you.

Email monksorchardweb@btinternet.com for contact details …. No strings attached.

Shirley District Guides
Girlguiding Shirley District was set up in 1949 and today there are 16 Units within our District. This year’s census shows that there are 324 girls, and 62 adult volunteers and Young Leaders actively involved in Guiding in Shirley. We are part of Croydon County. The Association’s Headquarters is based in central London.

Currently there are 3 Rainbow Units, 9 Brownie Packs and 4 Guide Companies in Shirley. Explorer Scouts will be meeting at St John’s Scout and Guide Hut from September 2002 and this is open to girls and boys up to 18 years old. Girls can join from the age of 5 years old as follows:

Brownies 7 - 10 years old
Guides 10 years old +
Rangers 14 years old +

Responsibility for District matters falls to a District Team. The District Team is collectively responsible for the well-being, encouragement and development of Guiding in Shirley District and for offering support to Guiders, Young Leaders and Unit Helpers.

Adult volunteers who decide that they would like to become a Guider follow The Association’s Training Opportunities: Leadership Qualification. There is also a comprehensive programme of trainings organised at County level. If you do not want to become a warranted Guider but would like to help a Rainbow/Brownie/Guide Unit on a regular basis you may want to consider becoming a Unit Helper.

As well as the weekly Unit meetings, annual District events include a swimming gala, the Rainbow Rumpus and Brownie Revels. From time to time the Guide Companies also hold a Golden Peg Challenge. Other opportunities exist for units to go on joint outings, holidays and camps. To find out where your nearest Unit meets, to put your daughter’s name on the waiting list, or just to find our more details about Girlguiding in Shirley contact Jane Marcroft, email: shirley.guiding@virgin.net
