Spring Park Wine Circle
Do you enjoy wine? The Club maintains that you can learn how to enjoy wine even more in the company of a friendly easy-going group.

They meet at 8.00pm every 2nd Thursday of the month in the Shirley Parish Hall on Wickham Road on the opposite side to the Post Office.

There is a varied wine tasting schedule with visiting speakers from every part of the wine industry. Waitrose and Marks and Spencer are included on this year's list.

A supper is provided at each meeting.

If you would like to go along one evening to see whether it is suitable for you, the first visit is free. Buses 119, 194 and 198 pass the door.

You are welcome to simply turn up, but for more information, contact the Secretary Mike Long on 0208 657 0705.

The Shirley District and Probus Club
The Shirley & District Probus Club was formed in 1973 - quite early in the history of Probus clubs - and several Shirley and West Wickham residents were involved in its foundation. Each Probus club is independent - there is no central body and they vary in size and activities - and will be found in towns and villages throughout the country and abroad. There are three clubs in our immediate area as well as a Ladies’ Probus.

Probus clubs are basically luncheon clubs for retired professional or business (in our case) gentlemen. We meet normally on the last Wednesday in the month at the Shirley Park Golf Club Clubhouse in Wickham Road for lunch followed by a speaker. We also organize day outings to historic houses, gardens or other interesting locations or institutions and theatre visits. A holiday abroad has been a feature of our programme for many years - in 2006 a group of 27 spent a very pleasant week in Croatia.

Because we have been thriving successfully for thirty-three years you will appreciate that some of our members are approaching maturity. It has always been our policy to encourage members to ‘bring a friend’ since new blood is vital to ensure the continuance of the club. We will welcome younger members who are interested in joining our activities. We may expect them to be recently retirees in the 60-70 or so age group, but age is no barrier to finding interest and fellowship in our club. We have no geographical boundary to deter members from joining us.

So, if you are retired and fit into the categories mentioned above, and although you may spend part of your week doing voluntary work, perhaps one lunchtimes a month in which you can relax and socialize might be attractive.

Monks Orchard Townswomen's Guild
Monks Orchard Townswomen’s Guild meets on the first Friday of every month at St. George’s Hall, Elstan Way, Shirley. Various speakers are invited to our meetings and their very interesting talks include such subjects as ‘Cooking for the Royals’, ‘Tudor London’, ‘Pub Signs and their stories’, ‘PAT’ Dogs’.

As well as these monthly meetings active sub-sections, such as arts and crafts, gardening, scrabble, play-reading, swimming and walking are participated in. These activities enable members to develop their skills and interests as well as providing fun and enjoyment. An annual charity quiz, with a fish and chip supper, is another event enjoyed and is always well attended. Friendship and support when needed are other attributes of the Guild.

Importantly, the Guild supports, by fund-raising, a local charity every year. This year’s chosen charity is a local one, ‘Magpie’, which teaches disabled children through dance and expression. Hopefully, this article has given an insight into the workings of Monks Orchard Townswomen’s Guild.

We look forward to welcoming new members to enable new ideas to be brought to the Guild.
